Nepal Teacher's Association-NTA though was officially established in 1990.has its history dates back to 1951.immediately after the dawn of democracy. Because the odd political situation, teachers in Nepal were not able to exercise their freedom of associations in a meaningful way. Again and again teachers associations were enthusiastically created and sadly cremated until 1980, the first phase of democratic movement rocking the world hugely dominated by authoritarian regimes.
The liberal political environment followed by the announcement of Referendum on the then party-less Panchayat system or a multiparty democracy; the teachers of Nepal were organized under the banner of Nepal National Teacher Association-NNTA.But, Nepal Nepalese teachers great enthusiasm for a strong and united teachers movement was soon shattered because, of the weakness and prejudices developed around the then teachers leadership. Misplaced political activism, opposed to sound professional values and norms defeated the organizational spirit and ideals of teachers movement joyfully cultivated in 1960.Similarly the government's callosity and bellicosity towards teachers organization was leaving no place for a sound professional grouping. As a result of long and complex dialogues between the government and teachers leadership reached to a agreement and brought two organizations for primary and secondary level teachers. The agreement was strongly opposed by the other NNTA leadership not involved in negotiation. As a result of this NNTA was divided into separate camps. However the division was not based vertically on mere political grounds. After the restoration of democracy in 1990,Nepal Teachers' Association was re-instated as continued legacy of 1951 initiatives.
